To Swab or Not to Swab

I love cotton swabs. Cleaning my ears is like brushing my teeth- very refreshing. A friend of mine doesn't clean his ears because the doctor told him he shouldn't stick the q-tip in his ear. Two times he was cleaning his ears and he ended up pushing a chunk of wax up against his eardrum and he had to go to the Emergency Room to have it removed. My argument is that if you keep your ear canal clean which means cleaning it consistently, no chunk of wax will get pushed up against your eardrum, but he won't listen. I keep mine clean and it has never happened to me. Doctors don't always know what they are talking about. I think a mature adult can handle the responsibility of sticking the swab in their ear and not damaging anyhing, unless it's already gummed up in there. It has happened to him TWICE. Hmmmm. . . I wonder who is right?

I use them in my ears regularly and have had no mishaps. Are you sure he's using q-tips and not something more dangerous like a pencil? ;)

Sometimes when I am cleaning my ears with a q-tip, I cough. This is a desireable side effect of ear cleaning and nothing to be alarmed about.

Obviously, some preventative mantainance is required.

Love q-tips. Love eargasms. First things I do after a shower in the am. Can't stand that "wet feeling" in my ears. I've used them in my ears for years with no problems whatsoever. Our kids use them in their ears as well.

What was that you said? Huh????

*grin*

(P.S. Moon, I'm able to view your blog again...go figure!)

IMO I clean after every shower! Even my very waxy husband cleans after every shower. I totally agree that if you clean it regularly there should not be a problem, unless of course you go in too far or you have an excessive amount of wax build up daily, but I don't think that is common. Please keep your ears clean people! Don't end up like my brother who waits so long he has to have a doctor power wash them out...ewwwww!!!! Just do it yourself. lol
I love the post!!!

I ALWAYS clean my ears out after every shower!!! It feels GOOD! I have never had any mishaps either... but I have heard doctors say not to put them in your ears.. maybe your friend is shoving them in there too far or hard?

Its so hard when our little ones have eczema... my daughter is 13 months old and can't help herself scratching...

you're right, of course MM. We use the swab a lot to clean the dog's ears too. But I wouldn't suggest sticking them! into the eardrum.

Never thought I'd be a participant in a blog conversation about cleaning ear wax or using q-tips.

I buy the real brand Q-Tip because I have found that they have the softest puffs on each end. I/we have been using them after the shower or swimming pool, and in fact our mother used to clean our ears after ever bath/shower when we were kids.

I did the same with our kids.

Ewwwww...the thought of NOT...

Never a mishap!

But, now I will likely think of this blog every time we clean our ears...

I've heard you're not supposed to, too, but I get wax build-up if I don't, and it's not like I'm going to go to the doctor every time I need my ears cleaned!

Box of Q-tips = much cheaper than a $20 co-pay!

everyone naturally produces different amounts of ear wax. I unfortunately produce a lot, and i have to go get my ears blown out by a doctor every so often, It sucks. I used to qtip every day but it was actually causing more problems for me, so now I only do it if i feel fluid or anything like that.
be glad you have low producing ears :P

i use them every day and even pack them when i travel so there you have it.

be very gentle, but yep! one of my kids had a very bad blockage... can we dare say... the size of a bean... but it wasn't. let the hot water of the shower run in that there ear canal then gently blot out excess water.... keep'em clean folks!

I have only heard of one mishap from a q-tip, which involved a toddler thinking she was funny and that mommy should chase her when she saw the q-tip in her ear...this resulted in a trip to the ER, so I would not recommend running with q-tips in your ears!

However, regular ear maintenance to my knowledge has never resulted in any such happenings! Love your blog title by the way! :)

Warm Olive oil works wonders on ear wax, a few drops twice a day. You shouldn't put anything smaller than your little finger in your ear. ps I'm a nurse lol

I ♥ my Q-tips-- But it has to be the brand name Q-tips...NEVER the store brand- they are pokey.

The only problem I've ever encountered was when my 2yo pulled the cotton off one end & I didn't notice. It poked me, but no real damage was done.

I use Q-Tips. I think your on the money with the consistency point. Just keep the build up minimalized and there won't be any trips to the hospital.
